A TOWN - A town that sings!

Barefoot Opera invite you to be part of an exciting new music project based on the lives of people in Hastings and Rother

ANYONE can be involved. EVERYONE is invited, no matter what your age, background, or singing ability!

Barefoot Opera has a mission to open and expand our vocal potential at all levels, and has developed a reputation for energised, youthful and accessible performances. In 2016, as part of the ROOT International Festival for the Arts, Barefoot Opera presented CLASH! – an inspiring community event, a choral extravaganza involving seven Hastings choirs, seven commissions, and music for the combined choirs - Bayeux! - composed by leading composer Orlando Gough.

Building on the success of CLASH!, Barefoot Opera has been awarded an Arts Council ‘Research and Development’ Grant for the first stage of an ambitious new project, also involving local people and professional singers and musicians, in the Spring 2018. The project is also generously supported by local charities Magdalen and Lasher, Sussex Community Foundation and Chalk Cliff Trust. Our working title is ‘A Town’ and it promises to be another thrilling music event, where this time, Orlando Gough will be working with librettist Stephen PLaice. The whole project will take place over the next three years and is positioned to take place at the De La Warr Pavilion in the Spring 2020.

The first stage of this genuinely grass-roots project is a far-reaching series of workshops in and around the communities of Hastings and Rother in April 2018, culminating with an afternoon at the De la Warr Pavilion. Some of these workshops will focus on singing. Others will be more about stories and ideas.

Workshops are already organised with Sound Waves Community Choir - who will welcome anyone wishing to join the choir for this project. We are also planning workshops with the Seaview Project, Links Drop-in Centre, school groups, groups with young people (ably assisted by creative arts organisation Eggtooth), choirs, older people…everyone! Please join one of the groups who are organising workshops (see our website for details). OR we are holding free, OPEN TO ALL workshops in March/April in St. Leonards-on-sea.

SINGING WORKSHOPS

10:30 AM - 12:00 PM March 31, April 7, April 14 and April 21

In these workshops we will free our voices and breath Barefoot Opera style, so if you are interested in our training methods you will enjoy this. You will also explore how we can tell stories more effectively as singers. We will also share stories and experiment with how we can deliver those stories with song.

TALKING WORKSHOPS

10.30AM – 12.OO PM April 1, April 8 and April 15

If you’d like to be involved, but are not particularly interested in singing, please come along to one of these sessions. These are about sharing stories, ideas, memories and frustrations about life in your town. We’ll be asking you to bring photos, snaps of family, friends or memories, objects or writing that represent something you feel strongly about. We’re interested in finding out more about the lives of people who live here, people we see each day and perhaps don’t know much about. We’re interested as much in what we have in common, as what we feel divides us.
